The Prophets Elijah and Elisha
The sun is high in the sky. It is hot on the streets of Samaria. Most people have sought a place in the shade. See, a man is approaching. He is clothed in a rough garment made of camel’s hair. This man is the prophet Elijah. He is going to the king’s palace. He looks with sorrow across to the other side of the court in front of the palace. There is a temple there, but it is not a temple for the Lord! Ahab had this temple built for Baal! King Ahab’s father has built the town of Samaria. Ahab, his son, has now built a temple for the idol Baal. His wife comes from the land of Sidon. She is a daughter of the king of Sidon and is called Jezebel. She has continued worshipping her father’s idol. Ahab is happy with this. Actually, he would like everyone to worship Baal. That is what makes Elijah so sad. He has told the Lord everything, and has asked if He will show that He alone is God. The Lord has promised that He will do so. Therefore the prophet is now going to Ahab’s palace.
